Tempe, Scottsdale say goodbye to Tribune tonight with historic event

December 16, 2008 · Published By Editor

Check out 121 years of history and headlines tonight at Tempe Mission Palms

Tonight from 5- 8 p.m., the City of Tempe will say goodbye to 121 years of continuous newspaper coverage by the family of newspapers now known as the East Valley Tribune with a proclamation and thank you — and a display that will go into the Tempe Historic Museum starting on Saturday.

Starting in just two weeks, the East Valley Tribune will no longer cover Tempe or Scottsdale. Tonight’s event will pay tribute to the history of service the newspaper has given the community.

Newspapers have told the life stories of Tempe and Scottsdale going back 121 years in the earlier days of the Arizona Territory. The Tempe Daily News and the Scottsdale Progress eventually gave way to the East Valley Tribune, continuing the chains of ink and newsprint that have shed light on important news and information across three centuries. It is this history that will be represented at the Tempe Historic Museum, Rural Road and Southern Avenue, starting on Saturday. You can get a sneak peek at the display tonight at the Tribute to the Tribune event.

The celebration of their service to the community will be hosted at the Tempe Mission Palms,  located just a block from the old offices of the Tempe Daily News. Tempe Mission Palms Hotel is located on Fifth Street, just east of Mill Avenue, 60 E. Fifth Street.

The event is free to attend, open to the public and paid for through sponsorships  by BJ Communications, Hallman and Affiliates, Phoenix Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, and Splinter Creative.

Comments and a proclamation by Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman and Scottsdale Vice-Mayor Bob Littlefield will be made at 6 p.m. Los Guys will provide entertainment for the evening.
