Phoenix Sky Harbor Offers Tips for Thanksgiving Travel

November 26, 2008 · Published By Editor

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is prepared for a busy travel week. The Thanksgiving rush will begin the Tuesday before the holiday and continue through the Monday after Thanksgiving.

The day before Thanksgiving, an estimated 140,000 passengers will travel through Sky Harbor, about 35 percent more than a typical Wednesday.

New this year, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is adding Family Lanes to each security checkpoint at Sky Harbor. These designated security screening lanes are for those who need a little extra time, or who have medically necessary liquids in excess of three ounces. Visit www.tsa.gov for additional information.

Travelers who haven’t flown since last holiday season may see new fees for checked luggage and on-board amenities, depending upon the airline. To avoid surprises, Sky Harbor recommends checking with the individual airline before coming to the Airport.

Sky Harbor is offering these additional travel tips:

  • Check flight status before coming to the Airport.
  • Arrive two hours before your flight departs.
  • If you plan to park at the Airport, call the 24/7 parking hotline at 602-273-4545 to check availability.
  • Pack larger quantities of liquids and gels in checked luggage.
  • Remember the 311 rule: most liquids and gels brought through the checkpoint must be in three ounce containers or less, carried in a zip top bag, one bag per passenger. The bag must be screened separately. Larger quantities of medically necessary liquids will be subject to additional screening and allowed only at the discretion of TSA screeners.
  • Bring a snack or meal for the plane. Beverages may be purchased past security and brought onto the aircraft.
