Volunteers Needed for VITA in Mesa
November 25, 2008 · Published By Editor
Since 2003, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) has offered free tax help to hard working Mesa residents who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Volunteer tax preparers are again needed for the program.
VITA volunteers will prepare the basic 1040 tax returns and related schedules and know the eligibility rules for claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC). New volunteer preparers must attend training in January. During the 2007 tax season, the VITA program returned more than $1 million in federal tax refunds directly to 1,422 households in Mesa.
There is also a need for other volunteers with the VITA program, including greeters, screeners and translators. All volunteers must attend an orientation session. The Mesa VITA volunteers, during the last tax season, donated a total of 2,157 hours. The value of their volunteer time was $42,083.
VITA tax sites will be open in February, March and April on weekdays and weekends. All locations will offer free electronic filing.
