Conquering Cancer and Grief Support Workshops

“Health for a Lifetime,” a series of free workshops presented by the city of Phoenix Human Services Department Senior Services Division and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, will present health information for older adults and the community.
The next workshop, “Conquering Cancer – A 21st Century Possibility!,” will be from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at Deer Valley Community Center, 2001 W. Wahalla Lane.
Dr. Joan Shapiro, vice president for the Division of Research and Development at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, will discuss the progress being made to conquer cancer. She will share what current research shows and what strides have been made in cancer prevention and control. For more information, call 602-495-3714.
Another workshop, “Reaching Out to Those in Grief,” will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at Devonshire Community Center, 2802 E. Devonshire Ave. Chaplain Bonnie McCulley, manager of Spiritual Care and Pallative Care Services, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, will discuss the complex and powerful experience of loss and how it affects us. Participants will learn 12 things to do when someone suffers a loss, words that bring comfort and tips on how to cope during the holiday season. For more information, call 602-262-7807.
Future monthly workshops will include information about nutrition, cardiac care and the latest cancer treatments. The workshops are free and open to the public and support the mission of the Healthier Phoenix Initiative.
The city of Phoenix operates 17 centers that provide adults, 60 years or older, with a variety of programs and services. St. Joseph’s is a 743-bed, not-for-profit hospital that provides a wide range of health, social and support services, with special advocacy for the underserved. It is part of Catholic Healthcare West, one of the largest healthcare systems in the West.
