Arizona State University Extends VoIP and Video Conferencing to Academic Partner With BridgeWave Gigabit Wireless Radios

Solution Allows ASU Students To Gain Video Access From Off-Campus Classrooms

Santa Clara, CA – November 10, 2008 – BridgeWave Communications, the leading supplier of gigabit wireless solutions, today announced that Arizona State University (ASU) has deployed BridgeWave’s gigabit wireless radios to extend campus network connectivity to a nearby academic partner, particularly for data, VoIP and video.

Located in Phoenix, Arizona, the nation’s fifth largest city, ASU currently has more than 64,000 enrolled students. ASU is recognized as a leader in cutting-edge interdisciplinary research in selected areas, both fundamental and applied. ASU’s Children’s Development Center (CDC), a research and internship lab for ASU students studying education and other child-focused degrees, has been designed to provide access to real-world classroom settings for training, ideally via video conferencing with Williams Community School students. ASU’s challenge was connecting the Williams Community School to CDC without opting for expensive fiber installation. They needed up to a gigabit of bandwidth, but wanted to avoid fiber installation due to the estimated $600,000 cost involved.

Antonio Carrera, network project manager at ASU, sought a cost-effective wireless solution that would accommodate up to a gigabit of data transfer and provide near-perfect reliability and availability as well. Carrier-class availability without delay was a vital factor in selecting the new solution. Carrera also wanted the product to withstand torrential downpours and monsoons.

After reviewing solutions from several wireless vendors, the ASU team was impressed with BridgeWave’s exclusive AdaptRate™ technology that immediately switches transmissions from the original gigabit capacity to 100 Mb/s data rates during intense weather or torrential downpours, in order to maintain a highly available link. ASU ultimately selected BridgeWave’s AR60X, with AdaptRate capability due to its reliability and high availability.

“ASU was looking for an affordable solution to provide reliable backbone network connectivity between the CDC and Williams Community School,” said Antonio Carrera, network project manager at Arizona State University. “We realized that BridgeWave’s radios were the only solution that would provide fiber-equivalent connectivity, even in unfavorable weather conditions, and sure enough, the radio has never gone down. Not only did BridgeWave’s AR60X product save us substantial amounts of time and money, it also provided more network capacity than competing solutions.”

“As Universities continue to expand in size to accommodate a growing number of students, faculty and partners, they seek affordable solutions to extend network connectivity throughout their campus network,” said Amir Makleff, president and CEO of BridgeWave Communications. “BridgeWave’s gigabit wireless technology will continue to play a vital role in campus networks, enabling the numerous applications universities use for training and educational purposes.”
