Governor’s award goes to Scottsdale cancer researcher

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Daniel D. Von Hoff, MD,  world-renowned cancer researcher and chief scientific officer for Scottsdale Healthcare, is 2008 recipient of the William F. McWhortor Community Service Leader Award presented tonight at the at the Governor’s Celebration of Innovation Awards.

The awards are organized through the Governor’s Office, the Arizona Department of Commerce and the Arizona Technology Council.

In his dual roles at the Translational Genomics Research Institute and at Scottsdale Healthcare, Dr. Von Hoff’s research encompasses both laboratory research and clinical treatment of patients. The strategic alliance between Scottsdale Healthcare and TGen allows molecular and genomic discoveries targeting cancer to reach local patients as quickly as possible.

In addition to his groundbreaking research, Dr. Von Hoff is as committed to advancing his younger colleagues professionally as he is to advancing the field of cancer medicine. Through the Drug Development Scholar program at Scottsdale Healthcare, his encouragement and guidance lead younger scientists into careers in cancer research.

“Dr. Von Hoff’s colleagues and staff refer to him as the “heart and soul” of the cancer research program and with his leadership, the methods of beating back cancer are being redefined,” said Mark Slater, PhD, president of Scottsdale Healthcare’s Scottsdale Clinical Research Institute.

In addition to being an accomplished and recognized scientist, Dr. Von Hoff is a tireless fund raiser for cancer research, supporting philanthropic campaigns to develop the Scottsdale Clinical Research Institute and TGen Clinical Research Services at Scottsdale Healthcare.
