Venue generates $41.3 million in spending in the Phoenix metropolitan area

Tempe, Ariz. – Arizona Business Magazine has awarded ASU Gammage its 2008 Economic Engines of Arizona Award, recognizing the institution for its significant economic impact to the state of Arizona.  The ceremony was held at the Ritz – Carlton in Phoenix on October 29, with Executive Director Colleen Jennings-Roggensack accepting the award on behalf of ASU Gammage.

The recognition follows the release of a national study by The League of American Theatres and Producers, Inc which shows that the 2005 Broadway series at ASU Gammage resulted in $41.3 million in spending in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

The study examined responses from 350 individuals attending shows at ASU Gammage and determined the series generated $23.5 million in direct spending and an additional $17.8 million in visitor spending.  More than 85 percent of visitors were single-ticket buyers who travel to ASU Gammage from across the state, bringing new monies into Tempe and the Valley while attending performances and programs.

ASU works in partnership with the Tempe Convention and Visitors Bureau and Downtown Tempe Community to promote business prior to and following performances, helping to generate revenue to area retailers, restaurants and hotels.

Additionally, for each of the Broadway shows that come to ASU Gammage during the 16 week season, a large cadre of performers, designers, production and technical staff arrive in the Valley.  The cast and production staff are housed in area hotels and frequent area restaurants, retailers, spas, gyms, bars and clubs, .bringing a significant amount of outside revenue to the state

A portion of the technical and production staffs for the Broadway touring productions include local laborers and musicians, thereby creating job opportunities for Valley residents.

”This is so gratifying on every level.  It is a thrill to know that not only are we touching so many lives with the beauty and power of our performances, but to see the tremendous economic impact ASU Gammage has on our state.  We are honored to be recognized with this award.” says Colleen Jennings Roggensack, Executive Director
