Family event features hands-on learning activities for Earth and space exploration

The annual Earth and Space Exploration Day, Saturday, Nov. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.,  is a fun – and free – educational event geared toward children and families, features booths with hands-on activities, demonstrations and lectures for kids and adults, as well as materials and resources for teachers.

Activities include: digging for meteorites, building rockets and robots, panning for gold, and a field trip to “A” mountain. Dr. Rock will be available to analyze rock samples and children are encouraged to bring samples from their backyard for analysis.

A more complete list of activities is available on the event’s Web site: www.sese.asu.edu/earth_space_exploration_day.

No registration is necessary, but visitors are encouraged to stop by the welcome table for information and special surprises. Public parking is free in any ASU lot south of University Avenue on Nov. 1. The most convenient parking is available in the Tyler Street parking structure on the corner of Tyler Street and McAlister, and in the Rural Road Parking Structure on Lemon Street and Rural Road. A parking map is available at: www.asu.edu/map.

This annual event, hosted by Arizona State University’s School of Earth and Space Exploration, has experienced remarkable growth over the past seven years with last year’s attendance topping 1,300. Staffed by the school’s faculty, researchers and students, the event is an opportunity for children and the general public to engage with scientists and researchers one-on-one or in small group settings. Earth and Space Exploration Day is one of the school’s most visible efforts to increase science literacy in Arizona.
