Chandler to Replace Aging Water Meters

October 23, 2008 · Published By

Days are numbered for City’s oldest water meters

The City of Chandler has started replacing 27,000 aging residential water meters located throughout the City. HD Supply Waterworks LTD, and their subcontractor U.S.I. Services, has been hired by the City to replace 9,000 meters a year over the next three years.

Water meters typically are located in front yards near the street and measure the amount of water a home is using. The work will require the old meters to be dug up, meaning landscaping may be disturbed. Yards and landscaping will be returned to their original condition as soon as the work is completed.

A notice will be placed on front doors 72 hours in advance of the work and will include a 24-hour hotline number for residents to call with questions. Another notice will be placed on doors when the work is completed.

Workers will possess identification badges and will be wearing reflective vests and driving U.S.I. vehicles. They will not need to enter homes, but as a courtesy will knock on doors to inform residents of their presence.

The new water meters use technology that will enable the meters to be read remotely. They emit radio signals that relay the information to a receiver mounted in the vehicles of Utility Meter Technicians (meter readers).
