ASU Gammage Offers Performances for Students

Tempe, Ariz. – To encourage students to experience the world of art and culture, ASU Gammage offers exclusive one-hour performances for students throughout the school year.

Performances cost $3 per student, teacher and chaperone. An accompanying teacher’s guide filled, with interactive lesson plans, is created by ASU Gammage and provided to teachers free-of-charge. ADAAWE:

ASU Gammage.  Suggested for grades 3-12.
ADAAWE is seven dynamic, diverse women creating rich organic music of the voice and drum, which comes from the heart and speaks to the soul! In the Adaawe tradition of Ghana, West Africa, women gather in the moonlight to create music and sing songs about life’s joys and sorrows. Through constant improvisation, they breathe new life into ancient music.

Charles Lewis Performs Langston Speaks:
Tuesday, February 17 & Wednesday, February 18, 2009, 10:30 a.m.
ASU Kerr Cultural Center.  Suggested for grades 6-12.

Celebrate Black History Month with local music great Charles Lewis’ “Langston Speaks.” Students will gain exposure to the poetry of Langston Hughes, inspired by the challenges created during the civil rights movement. Journey into the disappointments, frustrations, fears, loneliness and triumphs of the human spirit through the poetry of Hughes and the expressive original music of Lewis.

JazzReach:
Tuesday, March 10, 2009, 10:30 a.m.
ASU Gammage.  Suggested for grades 3-7.

Discover the rich cultural legacy of Jazz in America with critically acclaimed New York based JazzReach. Seamlessly combining live music, spoken word, and video JazzReach engages student audiences while educating and connecting them to the vibrant history and art of jazz.
