SCC Announces Grand Canyon Adventure

Looking for a Grand Canyon adventure?  Scottsdale Community College Recreation offers two opportunities.  Limited permits available; registration is first come, first served.

Backpacking Havasupai Canyon -1 credit, REC155AF, #30595
First orientation class is Sunday, Oct. 5, 8pm Gym Lobby.  This is a onetime orientation meeting.  Trip leaves Thursday, Oct. 16, 5pm and returns Sunday, Oct. 19, 10pm.  Hike down to Havasupai Campground on Friday, layover Saturday and hike out Sunday.  Travel/activity cost of $145 includes roundtrip transportation, first night motel, campground fees and permits. Basic level of fitness required. 

Travel/activity cost is due at registration, no travel/activity cost refunds after 10/6.  Enrollment limit: 20.

Rowing Grand Canyon White Water – 1 credit, REC155AD, #37959
First class orientation is Sunday, Oct. 5, 8:30pm, SCC Gym Lobby.  This is a onetime orientation meeting.  Trip leaves Friday, Oct. 24, 6am returns Tuesday, Oct. 28, 10pm.  Covers basic camping, hiking and rafting  skills and an introduction to the geological history of the Grand Canyon.  Basic level of swimming and fitness required.  This 5 day whitewater rafting adventure includes round-trip transportation from/to SCC, shuttles, camping and rafting equipment, food, and river guides. 
Travel/activity cost of $495.

Travel/activity cost is due at registration, no travel/activity cost refunds after 10/6.  Enrollment limit: 11.

REC155AF (class #30595) Havasupai Backpacking Student:
Due to the recent flooding, Havasupai will be closed to all tourists until the first of the year.  We will offer another possibility; same cost – $145. Travel/activity fee plus the one credit tuition and the same dates.  Sunday, Oct. 5, 8pm, Gym Lobby – first class orientation.  We have permits/tickets/reservations for 20.  First come, first served.

  • Leave SCC Thursday, Oct. 16, 6pm – drive (in school vans) to Howard Johnsons Motel in Williams.
  • Friday Oct. 17, take the train, leave Williams 9am, arrive Grand Canyon South Rim 11:15am.  Take the free shuttle to Mather Campground (or walk) set up camp at group site #6.  Afternoon hike on the Hermit Trail, evening Ranger talk at campground amphitheater.
  • Saturday Oct. 18, day hike with optional mileages:  a) hike down the South Kaibab across the Tonto and up the Bright Angel Trail, b) rim trail, c) Indian Gardens.
  • Sunday, Oct. 19, morning site seeing on south rim, leave by train 3pm arrive in Williams 5:15pm drive (in school vans) back to SCC.
  • The $145 travel/activity cost includes: roundtrip transportation (school vans), motel (Howard Johnsons) in Williams, roundtrip train,  Grand Canyon entrance fee, Mather Campground permit.  Does not include:  food, camping equipment.

You are welcome to take your gear with you on the train or leave it in the school van.  We will drive one school van to Mather Campground.
