Williams Gateway Airport Authority Chairman, Mayor Scott Smith of Mesa reported the results from an economic benefit analysis conducted by Arizona State University indicating an overall economic benefit of nearly $500 million during fiscal year 2007-08 at a news conference held this morning at the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. At the same event, Allegiant Air CEO Maury Gallagher presented a ceremonial check for $3 million to the Airport Authority representing their capital contribution to expand the passenger terminal.
“We are excited about Allegiant Air’s commitment to this market as shown by their willingness to partner with the airport in expanding the passenger terminal,” said Mayor Smith, Airport Authority Chair, “Companies like Allegiant Air are key players in creating the economic boon we are beginning to see at this airport as highlighted in this study.”
The report also indicated that airline visitors spent more than $64 million in the airport area supporting approximately 900 jobs.
Allegiant Air’s capital contribution will allow the airport authority to expedite the expansion of the passenger terminal. “We could not be moving forward on this important project without the help of our partner, Allegiant Air,” said Lynn Kusy, Executive Director of the Williams Gateway Airport Authority.
Allegiant Air CEO Gallagher also discussed the low-cost carrier’s growing presence in the community and region, a fact that was applauded by Mesa Convention and Visitors’ Bureau President Robert Brinton, “Allegiant is a vital part of this tourism market. Their added flights and unique business model not only allow them to thrive during these difficult economic times but also give our market an edge over other destinations.”
The full economic benefit analysis is available on the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Website at www.phxmesagateway.org/. The passenger terminal expansion project is expected to begin later this year.
