GOLD CANYON, AZ – On Sunday, September 7, Gold Canyon residents will have another opportunity to hear live jazz-right here in Gold Canyon, in the summer!
A new concert series, entitled “Concerts at the Superstitions,” got underway at Spilled Beans Espresso on Kings Ranch Road earlier on August 3. A “standing room only” crowd sipped coffees, savored ice cream and pastries and listened to an exciting evening of jazz presented by multi-instrumentalist, jazz composer/arranger Mike Crotty; two-time Grammy award-winning pianist Nick Manson; Washington, DC, bassist, Thomas Williams; and singer/songwriter Deater O’Neill. Also featured was an exhibit of photographs capturing the breathtaking beauty of the Superstition Mountains by Arizona nature photographer, Joanne West.
Spilled Bean Espresso owners, Pat Butler and Paul Predmore, were more than pleased to have a shop full of satisfied and happy patrons on a hot summer night. “It was a gamble all the way around, but I hoped that others might be as eager to hear and experience great jazz as I was -without having to drive 30+ miles, spending big money on gas alone!” said concert organizer Deater O’Neill. “Pat and Paul took a chance that I could deliver the music and the audience. The fact that people came out for this evening of entertainment and jazz shows that there is a lot of support and enthusiasm for music and the arts out here even without the hundreds of winter visitors that fill our community every year. My goal is to present all of the best jazz artists in Arizona throughout the year, building a series worthy of its beautiful surroundings.”
The series continues on Sunday, September 7 at 7:00 pm with Inner Journeys, featuring jazz masters, Bob Ravenscroft (piano) and Dwight Kilian (bass). In a rare local engagement, these kindred musical spirits explore jazz standards, music from the American popular songbook and their own original compositions with insight and innovation. www.musicservingtheword.org
The evening also features the celebrated work of Arizona nature photographer, Joanne West. (www.jwestphotography.com) It is an evening designed to inspire and entertain even the most harried of souls!
On October 5, Acoustic Brazilian music artists Caji and Salome, will perform their dynamic fusion of African rhythms and music from Portugal, Cuba, South America and France.
“Concerts at the Superstitions” features the best in jazz on the first Sunday of every month at Spilled Beans Espresso, 6832 S. Kings Ranch Rd, Gold Canyon. Showtime: 7:00-9:00. Cover charge: $10.00.
