SRP Warns of Utility Fraud

Salt River Project customers are being warned of a scam in which someone is impersonating an SRP employee and asking for credit card information. These imposters try to convince customers that their power is in danger of being cut off and that only an immediate credit card payment can avoid disconnection of service.
“SRP customer service representatives do not call our customers and ask for credit card numbers,” said Michael Lowe, SRP’s manager of customer services.
Residential customers are not the only potential targets of these scam artists. According to Lowe, several commercial customers have notified SRP of similar suspicious contact.
In the past, thieves have impersonated utility company employees to steal credit and debit card numbers or to offer cash to attempt to solicit appointments in people’s homes. To avoid becoming a victim of these scams, Lowe urges SRP customers to:
- Not give your credit or debit card number or other personal information to any caller or visitor without knowing their true identity.
- Call SRP at (602) 236-8888 for accurate information about their electric account and to obtain SRP employee identification and program information.
- Contact local police if they receive a similar call from a scam artist.
