The average person can burn off 350 calories an hour while roller skating so get out of the heat, get retro, have fun and get fit at the City of Mesa’s August Fit City event, which will be held Friday, Aug. 8 at Skateland Roller Skating Center.

Admission is free if you wear a Fit City shirt and have your own skates. Rental skates will be available at a reduced fee, $3 dollars for regular skates, and $4 for blades with a skate rental maximum of $12 for a family of five.

Mesa’s Fit City Challenge is a program developed by the City of Mesa Parks, Recreation and Commercial Facilities Department to encourage Mesa residents to increase their level of physical activity and discover new ways to become more physically fit and healthy!  The Fit City program aims to provide the tools, motivation and mentoring for each individual to succeed and for our community to come together and address the epidemic of obesity.

The Fit City Challenge includes one event each month in 2008, at various locations throughout Mesa.

More than 850 people have registered and those who took part of the majority of the Fit City challenges will be eligible to win prizes at the end of the year.

Those who have not participated in previous Fit City events can register at the event. Registration cost $5 per person (T-shirt included), and those who register will be able to participate in all of the remaining 2008 Fit City events.

Skateland is located at located at 7 E. Southern Ave. Mesa and the event will run from 5:30pm-730pm.
