Salt River Project was honored as the First American Corporate Leader for continued efforts benefiting the Native American community through partnerships at the Navajo and Coronado generating stations in Page and St. Johns. SRP also was recognized for maintaining a positive business relationship with Native American business owners through contract opportunities.

SRP received the honor during the 14th annual First American Leadership Awards (FALA) ceremony, held at the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development.

As a result of operating generating facilities in Page and St. Johns, SRP provides jobs to both communities, maintaining positive relationships with the Navajo Nation, Hopi Tribe and other regional Native American tribes, said Glen Reeves, SRP’s manager of Power Generation.

SRP also strives to sustain the local economy by using businesses in the areas surrounding its generating facilities, said Linda Paugh, SRP’s senior Supplier Diversity administrator. Procurement agents work to include Native American-owned businesses in day-to-day purchases as well as through long-term business partnerships, she said.

One such partnership is the Chance Corporation, a Native American-owned hauling company that serves as a sub-contractor hauling the fly ash and limestone at the Navajo Generating Station.
“We are honored to be recognized for our commitment to the Native American communities.” Paugh said. “SRP proudly utilizes their talents and expertise as often as possible, whether it’s fulfilling Human Resources or Supply Chain needs.”

FALA is an annual fundraising tribute to Native American economic success and achievements honoring the accomplishments and contributions made by Native Americans and those who support their economic development and business endeavors. FALA is presented annually by the National Center and is sponsored by corporations dedicated to the development of Native American businesses. Awards are presented in various categories to individuals who have helped facilitate Native American entrepreneurship.

SRP is the largest provider of electricity to the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, providing electric service to more than 935,000 customers.  SRP also is the metropolitan area’s largest supplier of water, delivering about 1 million acre-feet to agricultural, urban and municipal water users.
