Phoenix School of Law Employee’s Office Explodes with Iconic

July 15, 2008 · Published By Editor

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Fun, bright, happy, and yellow are words not typically associated with a law librarian’s office. But these four words perfectly describe the smiley-face drenched office of Becky Gremes, Law Library Assistant at Phoenix School of Law in central Phoenix. Gremes has flooded her work space with the iconic smiley face of the 1970’s. From a smiley face vodka bottle to smiley face toilet paper, Gremes has all things smiley face related in her office – couch and phone included.

Interestingly, Gremes’ nontraditional office does not raise eyebrows at the law school. “We have a very permissive policy on cubicle and office decoration,” said Neil Newman, HR Manager at Phoenix School of Law. “Unique decorations are often conversation starters and allow employees to express themselves in unique ways – which is an important part of the company culture at PhoenixLaw.”
The happy symbol was first popularized in the early 1970s by Bernard Spain, who seized upon it in a campaign to sell novelty items emblazoned with the symbol and the phrase “Have a happy day.” Thanks to Gremes, the symbol and its associated message give students and faculty at Phoenix School of Law a daily lift -with a smile.
